For the purpose of The ROI Art Prize, the entry is defined as an original artwork, with the following dimensions: HORIZONTAL - minimum 1200mm, maximum 2000mm; VERTICAL – minimum 1200mm, maximum 2000mm. Artists are invited to inspect the Art Space prior to considering their work for entry.
The prize is open to all artists living in, working in, or represented by galleries, in the municipalities of Yarra, Melbourne, Darebin and Moreland.
The ROI Art Prize is an acquisitive prize. Each year’s winner will be awarded $10,000 on delivery of the artwork. The original artwork, suitably framed, must be delivered to the ROI by 1 February 2020. The artwork remains the property of the ROI. The annual prize is sponsored by the owners of the ROI and corporate sponsor Nelson Alexander Real Estate.
A People’s Choice selection is also conducted by residents’ votes. The selected artwork will receive a prize of $1000 on delivery artwork. The original artwork, suitably framed, must be delivered to the ROI by 1 February 2020 to be hung at the ROI for 12 months. It will be auctioned at the following year’s presentation night. The reserve shall not exceed the price submitted on entry. The ROI reserves the right to bid for the work, or buy it if not sold. If not sold, it will be returned to the artist. The People’s Choice award is sponsored by WINConnect.
All entries must be the original work of the submitting artist and must have been designed or completed within two years prior to November 2019.
There is no limit to the number of entries an artist can submit. A separate application form must accompany each entry. Only one work per artist will be shown in electronic exhibition on the screen in the ROI West Wing foyer, 4 Bik Lane, Fitzroy North.
Entries close at 5pm on Thursday 7 November 2019. By that date, the entry form and check list must be completed and submitted online, and a high resolution JPEG of the artwork emailed to the ROI Art Prize email address firstname.lastname@example.org No late entries will be accepted.
The winners will be responsible for framing their works suitable for hanging once winners are announced.
There will be two rounds of judging. The first round by the pre-selection judges, who will choose 8 to10 artworks for the exhibition. Shortlisted artists will be notified.
Three independent, qualified judges will decide the winners of the 2019 ROI Art Prize from the works selected for exhibition, which will be electronically displayed on a screen in the foyer of the ROI Apartments at 4 Bik Lane, North Fitzroy from Monday 25 November to Thursday 28 November.
During the electronic exhibition, residents of the ROI will be invited to vote for the People’s Choice Award. In the event the People’s Choice is the same as the winner, the artwork with the second highest number of votes will be announced as the People’s Choice.
The winners will be announced at a cocktail party function in the foyer of the ROI at 6 pm on Thursday 28 November 2019. It is a condition of entry that shortlisted artists or their representatives must be present when the winners are announced.
The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence can be entered into.
EXHIBITION CRITERIA & PROCESS
Artists selected for the electronic exhibition must have provided a high resolution JPEG image of their final work and an artist statement with their entry form.
All works exhibited in the ROI Art Prize exhibition, except the $10,000 winner, will be for sale. The People’s Choice winner will be sold by auction at the 2020 presentation event. The sale price listed on the entry form will remain as the final sale price on all promotional material if the artist is selected as a finalist.
The placement of all winners’ artworks within the ROI will be at the discretion of the 2019 Art Prize Committee.
Artists grant the ROI Art Prize Committee and its licensees the right to reproduce their work and biographical material by any means in any media for archival and promotional purposes. The artist and their gallery (if applicable) will be properly acknowledged in such material.
